Condition
Minor surface dirt and a few very minor chips to the edges of the drapery consistent with age and handling. A minor lack to the dog's proper right foot.

Catalogue Note
Originaire de Nancy, Sigisbert-François Michel commença sa formation à Paris auprès de son oncle, Lambert-Sigisbert Adam et devint membre de l'Académie de Saint-Luc avant d'être appelé à Berlin, aux services du roi de Prusse, pour le château de Sans-Soucis. De retour en France, non sans avoir rencontré quelques difficultés pour le paiement de ses travaux par le roi de Prusse, Frédéric II, il travailla beaucoup en collaboration avec son frère Sigisbert-Martial.
L'enfant peinant à progresser, retenu dans son élan par le petit animal solidement accroché à sa chemise, fait parfaitement écho à la composition d'une estampe d'après Jean Honoré Fragonard, intitulée Monsieur Fanfan jouant avec Monsieur Polichinelle et Compagnie, dont une planche est conservée au Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 1972.539.1).
