inscrit au dos Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, philosophe et mathématicien, né à Paris en 1717, secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie française, un des fondateurs de l'Académie française, un des fondateurs de l'Encyclopédie et également inscrit de ces vers Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas atque metus et inexorable fatum subjecit pedibus [Heureux le sage, instruit des lois de la nature, / Qui du vaste univers embrasse la structure, / Qui dompte et foule aux pieds d'importunes erreurs. Virgile, Géorgiques, Livre II, v. 490-93]

Condition
Very good condition overall, with some minor surface dirt consistent with age and handling and minor chips to the drapery. A few minor chips to the edges of the marble base.

Catalogue Note
Egalement philosophe et mathématicien éclairé, le nom d'Alembert demeure pourtant étroitement associé à celui de Denis Diderot avec qui il dirigea l'Encyclopédie. Fils illégitime de la salonnière Claudine Guérin de Tencin et du chevalier Louis-Camus Destouches, il fut abandonné sur les escaliers de la chapelle Saint-Jean-le-Rond et fut donc baptisé du nom de son saint patron. Le chevalier Destouches ne reconnaîtra pas sa paternité mais assurera l'éducation de son fils par les plus prestigieuses institutions, à commencer par le collège des Quatre-Nations. Coutumier des grands salons de son temps, il y rencontre Denis Diderot en 1746. En 1751 est publié le premier tome de l'Encyclopédie dont d'Alembert rédigea le Discours préliminaire. En grand désaccord avec Diderot, il quitte la direction de l'Encyclopédie en 1757. Il poursuivit ses travaux scientifiques qui seront célébrés par Nicolas de Condorcet dans son éloge funèbre.
