Catalogue Note
L'orfèvre Pierre Théremin fait partie de ces artistes d'origine protestante française qui connurent un vif succès auprès des cours royales européennes au XVIIIe et XIXe siècle. Fils d'un pasteur huguenot émigré, il naquit à Gramsow/Gross-Ziethen en Prusse et fut apprenti graveur et joaillier à Berlin. Il s'installa en Russie en 1793, rejoint deux ans plus tard par son frère François Claude. Les deux orfèvres étaient membres de la corporation des orfèvres et joailliers étrangers, et Pierre en fut même gardien. Nommés bijoutiers de la Cour, les deux frères furent très appréciés par la cour impériale de Paul Ier, puis Alexandre Ier, pour qui ils réalisèrent de nombreuses tabatières, voir Sotheby's Londres, 27 May 2004, lot 178. Sa santé l'obligea cependant à arrêter son métier et il mourut à Genève en 1802.
