Margarita Classen-Smith, of Norwegian descent, moved to France in the twenties and opened her embroidery on leather workshop in Vanves in 1923. She worked for famous fashion houses and under her own name for decorators and individuals.
In 1935, she began a collaboration with Jean-Michel Frank and Christian Bérard which lasted until Jean-Michel Frank passed away. She was responsible for accurately transcribing works that the painter created for Jean-Michel Frank onto fabric and leather. Her compositions can be found in several interior designs created by Jean-Michel Frank such as Madame Artaud’s apartment or Jorge Born’s villa.
Our box was made from a watercolour by Christian Bérard called “Les Bijoux”. This drawing can be found on another box, almost identical to ours, which was illustrated in the exhibition catalogue of the Fondation Pierre Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Michel Frank, un décorateur dans le Paris des années 30, October 2^nd 2009- January 3^rd 2010, Paris, p. 128 as well as on a sycamore fireguard.

FR : Très bon état général Un petit manque d'ivoire à un angle inférieur du couvercle. Quelques traces d'humidité et de saleté sur le cuir. Une possible petite restauration à l'angle droit du cuir (visibe sur la photo du catalogue). Traces de colle aux jointures de l'ivoire. Quelques petites décolorations sur l'ivoire et deux petits éclats sur la partie basse de la boite. EN : Very good overall condition. One minor chip of ivory to a lower angle of the top. Some traces of humidity and dirt on the surface of the leather. A possible repair on the proper left angle of the leather (visible on the catalogue illustration). Traces of glue at the joints of the ivory. Minor surface discoloration on the surface and two minor chips of ivory on the bottom edges.

D’origine norvégienne, Margarita Classen-Smith s’installe en France au début des années 20 et ouvre son atelier de broderies en applications de cuir en 1923 à Vanves. Elle travaille pour de grandes maisons de couture et aussi sous son propre nom pour des décorateurs et des particuliers.
Sa collaboration avec Jean-Michel Frank et Christian Bérard débute vers 1935 et se poursuit jusqu'au décès du décorateur. Elle est chargée de retranscrire fidèlement sur tissu et cuir les projets que le peintre crée pour Jean-Michel Frank.  On retrouve ses compositions dans plusieurs de ses aménagements comme l’appartement de Madame Artaud ou la villa de Jorge Born.
Notre coffret a été exécuté à partir d’une gouache de Christian Bérard intitulée « Les Bijoux ».
