Inspiration from Islamic arts is pervasive in Emile Gallé’s glass work but is however more unusual in his lamps. The examples of the latter are indeed rare and indicate the artist’s greater freedom of adaptation. In terms of our mosque lamp, Gallé moves away from the traditional model by integrating portrayal, of butterflies and flowers, into the decor.

Condition

EN : Good overall condition. Minor surface scratches scattered. Some wear and small lacks to the enamel and the gilt throughout the surface of the lamp, consistent with age and use. Some surface dirt, overall the lamp would benefit from a professional clean. One flaw on the lower part (approximately 6 cm), likely a manufacturing flaw, photographs available on request. The glass and the enamel decoration are quite rich which seems to have resulted in some very minor internal flaws and some craquelure particularly to the yellow enamel at the lower part. The chains are not the original ones, though the impressive bronze mounts is original with three cast satyr masks. The size and the pattern of this chandelier are very impressive. The form of this lamp is both rare and impressive and Gallé has incorporated his trademark motifs of the butterfly and the sunflower in the unusual stylized patterns.

Catalogue Note
