Catalogue Note
By the early 1650s, watches were made to be worn in some form of pocket and therefore pendant watches from the Commonwealth period are rarely seen. The rock crystal to both the front and back of the case have radiating facets which emanate from small, slightly dished, centres, matched by the edges of the gilt metal case. Shorter subsidiary lobes are cut on the facets, giving the overall impression of flower heads. The dial is beautifully engraved with fine and subtle shading providing an excellent three-dimensional effect. A comparison can be made with slightly earlier dials by Masterson and Drake, see lots: 13 and 17.
