Catalogue Note

At Beverly Hills High, Simon proved a triple threat, a Boys' League President, an athlete on the football and wrestling teams, and a political cartoonist for the Highlights newspaper where he honed his sharply defined point of view and was voted "Most Talented." The many notations in his senior yearbook portend his success as an artist and also mention his sense of humor, along with the usual hard to decipher inside references to past fun times. One friend writes "Sam, May your cartoons always reflect an elucidation of the best in political wit, morality and truth..." and another writes "I wish you luck though you don't need it. Your talent will carry you through." While the yearbooks include the usual sports, prom and organization photos, these also exhibit the turbulence of the times and the schools dedication to the arts, current affairs and social issues. Its speakers included then Channel 4 reporter Tom Brokaw and Secretary of State Edmund Brown on Political Day. It showed its civic side working with the disadvantaged on Albion Street. In 2013 Simon and Nora Ephron, another alumnus, were honored at the BHHS Hall of Fame dinner for lifetime achievement in the Performing Arts. Other notable BHHS alumni include Angelina Jolie singer Lenny Kravitz, Monica Lewinsky, Nicolas Cage, Laraine Newman (of Saturday Night Live), Tori Spelling, and Julie Kavner, the voice of Marge Simpson.
