Catalogue Note
An October 2014 issue of Vanity Fair featured an article about Simon which appears to capture the moment this image was taken. In conjunction with PETA, Simon had sponsored the recovery of an abused grizzly bear named Marley.
Journalist and friend of Simon, Merrill Markoe writes, "Sam approaches her cage and crouches down so they are eye to eye. He offers her a biscuit, which she gently accepts. 'I always try to tell them, I know the past few days have been rough, but everything’s going to be O.K. from now on,' he says later when I ask him what he was thinking when he was inches from Marley’s enormous head."
