Catalogue Note

The Sullivan/Corbett fight was historic, not only for its outcome, but also for the fact that it was one of the first championship fights to be governed by the Marquess of Queensberry rules, mandating that fighters wear gloves. After this fight, 'Queensberry' rules became the norm, thereby making Sullivan the last bare-knuckle champion in history. Corbett knocked Sullivan out in the twenty-first round. After the bout, the always flamboyant Sullivan asserted "If I had to get licked I'm glad I was licked by an American." The fight marked the final bout of Sullivan's long and illustrious career.
