Description

  • George Nakashima
  • Desk
  • American black walnut and pandanus cloth

Provenance

Acquired directly from the artist, 1957
Thence by descent to the present owners

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The wood presents with rich coloration and variation in the figuring. The surface of the top with a few minor shallow surface scratches, minor edge wear and abrasions and rubbing to the surface, consistent with age and gentle use. The surface of the top with minor fading and a few scattered areas of discoloration, the largest (visible in the catalogue illustration) measures approximately 4 ½ by 3 ½ inches. This work is very early by Nakashima and the current condition shows the care and attention of the current owners. The original owners of this work met Nakashima in 1955 when they had a piece of furniture to repair. They enjoyed art and had an eye for what was modern. Mr. Nakashima explained that he did not repair but he did create furniture. When they saw his beautiful, organic pieces they were hooked. What began with a purchase of a headboard, developed into a close personal relationship and the acquisition of a number of pieces over the years. This desk shows a wonderful early variation of the form that Nakashima would later call the "Double Pedestal" desk made specifically for this owner. ---
