One of my reclusive friends was an enigma.  A realized man, his exchanges with companions seemed, on the surface, entirely dyspeptic and unenlightened.  He seemed to have a negative comment about everything.  But to know him was to understand that his negativity was always aimed at prompting recognition of irony and being entertaining.  There was always an amusing, often enlightening twist to his apparent complaints that cancelled out the negativity and made it positive.  I came to realize that he parodied the common, dusty-world, moaning official or merchant who focused only on himself and always on the negative, without humourous intent.  So when I decided to invite him to spend a few months with me in my retreat in the mountains of  Fujian, I carved for him a wish fulfilling  sceptre the head of which snarled at all who held it.  It turned out to be very adept at giving rise to entertaining stories and jokes at any gathering.
