Catalogue Note
A graduate of the China National Academy of Art in 1981, Wang Dongling is recognized as one of the most gifted and important modern calligraphers in China. His work evokes a range of global influences — with strong, structural forms reminiscent of Kline and Motherwell and live calligraphic painting performances that harken to the gestures of Japanese modern artists Yu-ichi (see lot 2818) and Shiraga. As the renowned professor at the Hangzhou Academy of Art, Wang at the forefront of scholarship in China and credited for significantly influencing the trajectory of contemporary calligraphic art over the past three decades. To Wang, Chinese characters are not only an aesthetic representation of the Chinese language, they form the root of Chinese culture itself.
