Catalogue Note

Few contemporary artists have cultivated an array of styles as diverse and distinct as Liu Guosong. Whilst his works are visibly influenced by zeitgeists of his time, from Abstract Expressionism to the moon landing, Liu is no mere respondent to current trends. After reaching a zenith of his moon series in the mid-1970s, Liu sought to develop a new technique and return to the subtle, refined abstractions developed in his earlier landscape painting.

Rising Cloud is a prime example of the maturity of his distinctive marbling technique, perfected over many years. The gentle mixture of ink and colour with water often produces otherworldly effects that are unobtainable through brushwork. These spontaneous images are further refined as finished works by Liu through his masterful ink washes. In this painting, a dark body of swirling clouds gradually rises above two lofty peaks escaping towards a crystal clear sky. Through a technically challenging technique that offers immense possibilities and unparalleled spontaneity, Liu captures viewers with his unique style of lyrical abstraction.
