Wang Jinsong is a leading contemporary Chinese artist whose artistic explorations over the past three decades include ink painting, oil painting, installation, photography and video art. His mastery of draftsmanship allows him to choose his medium to best fit each work’s concept whether illustrating his positions on political, social or environmental issues. A graduate from the Chinese painting department at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, Wang is most familiar with the medium of ink even though his earliest oil paintings were recognized at the forefront of China’s Cynical Realism and Political Pop art movements. In the 2000s, Wang began his Ink Figure series as candid snapshots of figures caught in motion. His monochromatic portraits capture images of the everyday in modern China, including the present Ink Figure No. 84 featuring a man practicing Tai-chi.
