Catalogue Note
Fang Zhaolin is not only an artist recognised for her significant contribution to the development of Chinese painting in the 20th century, but represents a worldly intellectual and woman ahead of her time in modern China. Trained as a classical painter, Fang went on to develop her own style under the guidance of modern artists and her contemporaries, which eventually led to her signature cun (textured) brushstrokes used in both her vibrant landscapes and expressive calligraphy. Intellectually restless and a world traveller, Fang constantly experimented with fresh visions for her compositions.
Cave Dwellers of the Yellow Highlands illustrates a common subject in Fang Zhaolin’s paintings, which originated from her travels to Huang Shan (Yellow Mountain) in China beginning in the early 1970s. The dramatic scenery of the ancient mountain area has inspired artists for centuries and for the artist, its enduring mystique represents an immutable sentimentality for her homeland.
