Catalogue Note

Hawaiian Landscape (Lot 2844), created after Tseng’s move to Hawaii in 1949, captures the majestic grandeur of the Ko’olau mountains near her home on the island of Oahu. Using traditional brush and ink techniques, Tseng pays homage to monumental Northern Song landscapes while capturing the unique vitality and distinctive biomorphic shapes of Ko’olau’s volcanic ridges. The cropped composition exaggerates the strange surrealism of the landscape, emphasizing the Chinese belief that mountains, rocks, and trees etc. are merely microcosmic transformations of qi, nature’s vital energy. This particular painting hung in the artist’s island home for decades as a reminder of her early period of painting.
