Catalogue Note
An iconic and striking piece, Ribboned by Mist stands out with its stunning, saturated hues of glacier blue. The multi-dimensional painting epitomizes Liu Kuo-sung's achievements in modern ink painting, with a layered symphony of multiple techniques—combining water-marbling, back-painting, fibre-plucking and collage. Liu pasted a figural, finely textured collage suggestive of ridged rock onto a surface of abstract washes, subtly augmented with handpainted outlines and stains. The collage anchors the otherwise surreal abstraction into an ethereal landscape, revealing an artist at a peak of his expression. The present lot was featured in the artist's groundbreaking solo exhibition at the Taiwan Fine Arts Museum in 1990, which formally established Liu Kuo-sung as a pioneer of modern Chinese painting.
