Catalogue Note

As a Hong Kong-based painter and professor, Koon Wai Bong is recognized for his conceptual installations and exquisite polyptychs of trees and flora. Featuring precise brushwork and a classical ambience, Koon’s tranquil depictions of nature evoke the timeless beauty of ancient Chinese guohua painting through a fresh multi-cultured and contemporary lens. In the four-paneled Verdant Bamboo Grove, Koon creates a lush green bamboo forest atop an opulent gold surface, which references the pounded gold-leaf backdrops of traditional Japanese folding screens. At the same time, the bordered panels connote the window frames through which modern urbanites appreciate nature, adding a deliberate layer of context and symbolism to the piece.
