Catalogue Note
Visually alluring and conceptually engaging, Bikini (Dots) intertwines sex and humor in the quintessential manner typical of its creator Jeff Koons. Koons’s subject matter is diverse and ranges from inflatable toys and vacuum cleaners to luxury items and sexualized images. Instigating a dialogue concerning the boundaries of art much like readymade pioneer Marcel Duchamp, Koons creates a universally accessible style that challenges the intersection between the avant-garde and popular culture navigated by his Pop Art predecessor Andy Warhol. On the occasion of the artist’s critically acclaimed 2012 exhibition at the Foundation Beyeler, curators Sam Keller and Theodora Vischer noted that the works Koons creates “are not instruments of critical reflection, which was the purpose of Duchamp’s ready-mades. On the contrary, they invite us to succumb to and be seduced by their pure, gleaming presence” (Exh. Cat., Basel, Foundation Beyeler, Jeff Koons, 2012, p. 8). The present work references the silhouette of a string bikini bottom from an oil painting in Koons’s Easyfun-Ethereal series from the early 2000’s. Reminiscent of 1960’s Pop Art with a shiny Koonsian twist, the cutout evokes the Nudes of Wesselmann as well as Lichtenstein’s famed Ben-Day dots. Made of steel with a lustrous, reflective shine, the present work ultimately coalesces the commonplace and the sexually suggestive.
