Catalogue Note

Committed to lauding a range of visual experimentations from individual artist’s corpus over time, the following group of works highlights a diverse collection of Post-War and Contemporary techniques and genres. From Elmer Bischoff’s lyrical late abstraction painting and Neil Welliver’s idyllic landscape of Maine’s Acadia National Park to Donald Baechler’s masterful collage Sing with Less Music and cutting edge works from today, there is no shortage of vibrant color and originality among these compelling works.  Each work invites us to ruminate not only about the piece at hand, but also the context in which we coexist.

Through a truly organic vision, discerning eye, and collecting grit, this collection is a testament to its collector’s belief that “the artistic richness of our culture is well worth celebrating.” Sotheby’s is honored to have the opportunity to present, indeed celebrate, this wonderful selection of works from the Ann and Graham Gund Collection and The Gund Art Foundation.
