Catalogue Note

Yasuda Yu

Oftentimes, contemporary Japanese art is equated with the hugely influential Superflat movement as coined by Murakami Takashi, or perhaps seen through the lens of kawaii, as evidenced by Nara Yoshitomo’s adorable oeuvre, or perhaps yet, the splendid Pop images created by Kusama Yayoi. The present sale presents a group of young, emerging, and talented Japanese artists who together represent a departure from such larger movements. Collectively, they represent the artistic forms of minimalism, the figurative, surrealism, and even abstraction. These young artists’ works breathe new life into the discourse of contemporary Japanese art, offering their audiences entirely new perspectives on such an established art form.

As a young artist, Yu Yasuda merges unexpected colours and uses loose strokes to transform urban life into dream-like landscapes. In his fantastical scenes of nature, the strokes of lines and compositions are painted with a spontaneous flourish, creating an energetic force on the surface of the canvas. He was born in 1982 in the Kagawa prefecture, and graduated from Mushashino Art University with a Master’s degree in oil painting. Soon after his graduation in 2007, he was awarded with the Tokyo Wonder Wall Award and joined numerous group exhibitions in Japan and abroad. His paintings were featured in Art Taipei 2012 at the Taipei World Trade Centre (2012), Painting Never Dies at Yuka Tsuruno (2012), and “Art in an Office” at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art (2011). Throughout his career, he has continuously held solo exhibitions in Japan, with a recent exhibition entitled “Between” at Yuka Tsuruno Gallery in 2014. His works are now collected by Yokohama Museum of Art and are part of the Takahashi Collection.
