Condition

This work is in good condition overall. There is evidence of light wear to the edges. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. There are some scattered pinpoint dust and dirt accretions on the surface. Under very close inspection, there are some very light surface scratches throughout, most notably in the first horizontal area of Ben-day dots closest to the ocean and in the diagonal area of Ben-day dots that extends from the upper right corner. Also under close inspection and in raking light, there is some very faint cleaning residue visible in the upper right corner and there is a variation in the surface texture at the tip of the upper right corner. The structure of the work is slightly bowed which is a common occurrence in the artist's chosen medium. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, the aforementioned variation in surface texture at the upper right corner fluoresces, and appears to have benefited from light retouching. Unframed.

Catalogue Note

“There is something humorous about doing a sunset in a solidified way, especially the rays, because a sunset has little or no specific form. It is like the explosions. It’s true that they may have some kind of form at any particular moment, but they are never really perceived as defined shape…It makes something ephemeral completely concrete.”
