Catalogue Note

Sotheby’s is proud to partner for a fifth consecutive year with the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) on a special series of works donated directly by celebrated artists David Altmejd, John Currin, Sam Durant, Adam Fuss, Hugo McCloud, Wangechi Mutu, Bosco Sodi, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rosemarie Trockel, Francesco Vezzoli, and Michael Wetzel.  Proceeds from the sale will benefit EJAF’s lifesaving work.

“Last year, thanks in part to caring people like the artists, galleries, and buyers participating in this sale, EJAF was able to award more than $6.8 million in grants to 110 worthy organizations across the U.S. and the Caribbean,” said EJAF Chairman David Furnish.  “As a result, over 68,000 people took an HIV test, over 14,000 HIV-positive people were retained in care, over 11,500 achieved viral suppression, and over 40,000 injection drug users were provided with clean syringes and harm reduction services.  Over 6,000 LGBT youth had access to social events with their peers and related services such as counseling and support groups.  More than 3,700 HIV-positive people leaving incarceration accessed support for housing and over 1,000 accessed job training and placement.  At least 1,500 people were trained to be more effective HIV advocates within their communities and with policymakers and the public.  And at least 500 healthcare providers were trained to be more competent in providing HIV-related healthcare.”

EJAF also helped to make significant strides in protecting the human rights of people most affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  “Our grants made it possible for over 40 organizations to provide legal services, and we gave crucial financial support to campaigns, legal action, and advocacy on HIV-related human rights issues,” said Founder Elton John.  “As a result, over 1,200 people accessed legal services to resolve issues such as discrimination in healthcare, employment, and housing.  And we’re very proud to have played a vital role in the movement that saw laws, policies, and policing and judicial practices affecting HIV-positive people, LGBT people, sex workers, and HIV-positive prisoners changed for the better in more than ten U.S. states.”

EJAF is the largest funder of LGBTQ health programs in the United States, the top funder of LGBTQ programs in the South, the top funder of Black LGBTQ programs in the nation, and one of the ten largest HIV grant-makers in the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America.   For a tenth consecutive year, EJAF has received the highest possible rating – four stars – from Charity Navigator, America’s premier evaluator of charitable organizations.

“The fifth anniversary of this highly successful art sale at Sotheby’s means so much to all of us,” said Elton.  “To date, this sale has raised $2.45 million for EJAF’s vital work.  Our thanks go out to all of the artists, galleries, and buyers who have made this possible.  Your support gives us the resources we need to take on the toughest fights and support those in greatest need.  And your belief in our cause inspires us to keep going.”
