Condition

This work is in good condition overall. There is evidence of light wear and handling to the sides and turning edges of the canvas, which has resulted in minor areas of light surface soiling. There are pinpoint black media accretions scattered in the upper right quadrant. One is approximately 5 ½ inches from the right edge and 25 inches from the top edge. Another is 9 inches from the right edge and 12 inches from the top edge. There is a 2 inch square area of surface irregularity in the white paint approximately 22 inches from the right edge and 22 inches from the top edge, which appears inherent to the artist's working method. There are several yellow/brown pinpoint accretions approximately 5 inches from the right edge and 30 inches from the top edge. There is an area of light surface soiling in the white paint along the left edge, approximately 16 inches above the bottom left corner. Under ultraviolet light inspection there is no evidence of restoration. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

“I see every spot within each painting as being alone yet together with all the other spots; I can find the pieces sad or happy... I think I’ll always make them… they’re a bit childish – a bit like sweets (smarties) or drugs. I had my stomach pumped as a child because I ate pills thinking they were sweets.” Damien Hirst
