Catalogue Note

"I feel that there has to be a moral value to color. Why should there be this color, or that color, or that color? It took me a few years to get the feeling of red and, in particular, cad red medium, which I happen to love. That just is like somebody saying, "I like pastrami." I can't tell you why. I like cad red medium. It has a certain resonance, a certain thing, particularly because you can go both ways with it, a little black goes well with it, a little pink goes well with it. I'm more of a tonal painter, maybe, I work with a few tones. I don't think I have ever been a colorist, working with color to create space. I've tried to locate forms more with tone. Color puzzles me. I become attached to a single color and work with it for years." Phiip Guston
