Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges of the construction with light handling marks visible in the peach painted area at the lower left. There is evidence of light soiling throughout the brown board area on the left side with light abrasions scattered throughout, most noticeably approximately 5 inches down from the edge, and there are 2 black media accretions also visible in this area. A light dust has settled in the crevices of the corrugated cardboard and along the surface of the yellow felt. In the varnished board, the surface irregularities appear inherent to the artistÂ’s working method and chosen medium. Also in this area, there are irregularities in tone along the hypotenuse edge approximately 21 inches from the lower left corner and approximately 2 inches from the upper left corner. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, these aforementioned variations in tone fluoresce darkly and appear to have benefitted from restoration. Unframed.

Catalogue Note

"Without ever turning his back on painting, Stella seeks throughout the trajectory of his own work to broaden the field of painting's endeavor. The Polish Villages constitute an essential stage in this progression, and it is difficult to characterize these works as either the terminal of the first epoch or the point of departure of the second. Most certainly they represent an essential turning point."
