Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. A minor and unobtrusive dark abrasion is visible in the center of the central square. Under very close inspection, a faint isolated surface irregularity in the upper left quadrant of the innermost square is visible, presumably inherent to the artistÂ’s working method. There is some evidence of light wear and handling at the edges. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there is evidence of very minor retouching towards the lower right and upper sides of the work. Framed.

Catalogue Note

“A painter wants to formulate with or in color. Some painters regard color as concomitant of form, and hence as subordinate. For others, and an ever-increasing proportion, color is the chief medium of their pictorial language. Here color attains autonomy. My paintings represent the second trend. I am particularly interested in the psychic effect, an esthetic experience that is evoked by the interaction of juxtaposed colors.” Josef Albers
