Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The edges of the sheet are deckled. There are artist's pinholes intermittently along the perimeter of the sheet. There are UltraLight media accretions scattered in the margins from the time of execution and inherent to the artist's working method. Under very close inspection, there is light pinpoint evidence of foxing and a yellow pinpoint media accretion is visible in the upper center of the figure 2. Also under close inspection, there is an inconsistency along the bottom edge of the figure 5's rectangle that appears to be inherent to the drying process of the artist's chosen medium. The sheet is hinged intermittently along the top half of the sheet and lateral edges to the matte. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

"It all began with my painting a picture of an American flag. Using this design took care of a great deal for me because I didn’t have to design it. So I went on to similar things like the targets [and numbers and] things the mind already knows. That gave me room to work on other levels. For instance, I've always thought of a painting as a surface; painting it in one color made this very clear." Jasper Johns
