Condition
Colour:
The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is deeper and richer in the original.
Condition:
This work is in very good condition. There is evidence of very light handling isolated in places to the extreme outer edges. Very close inspection reveals a few faint surface abrasions in places, which are possibly original. All other surface irregularities are in keeping with the artist's choice of medium and working process. No restoration is apparent when examined under ultraviolet light.

Catalogue Note
Early in her career Chantal Joffe’s subjects were primarily drawn from pornographic images and fashion photography. Painting in her trademark thick oil paint she imbued the source images with a newfound humanity, giving emotion to the objectified original subject.
Having a child signalled a new direction in her oeuvre, and the depiction of the mother and child came to the fore in her work. Mother and Child II is a superb example of her insightful and uncompromising look into motherhood and the complexities surrounding this key human state.
The dynamic of the painting at first glance seems simple, a mother bent over embracing a happy child. However it is in the mother’s uncompromising gaze that uncertainty appears.
