Description
- Sigmar Polke
- Untitled
- signed and dated Paris 5.10.88 on the reverse
- heat-sensitive pigment on canvas
- 40 by 50cm.; 15 3/4 by 19 5/8 in.
Provenance
Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner
Condition
Colour:
The colour of the work may vary depending on the temperature of the room it is in. The catalogue illustration fails to convey the versatile nature of the surface visible in the original, notably upon touching the reverse of the canvas.
Condition:
The pigment is still fully heat-sensitive. There are irregularities to the surface which may be inherent to the artist's choice of medium. Close inspection reveals a few thin and unobtrusive surface scratches isolated in places. There is a circular spot of retouching towards the lower left corner, visible under both normal and UV light.

Catalogue Note
The present work is an outstanding example of Sigmar Polke's experimentation with materials, in which the surface of the painting changes colour when the work is activated by placing one's hand on the reverse of the work.
