Catalogue Note
Fascinated by the practice of artistic conception, Harold Ancart’s works reveal the artist’s process-driven approach which includes a multitude of media and material such as sculptures, photographs and found material. A recurrent motif in his works, the melancholic utopia of a tropical paradise is repeatedly found in the form of parrots or tree leafs which evolve into exotic and nostalgic dream-like landscapes. The intense blackness that dominates most parts of the work evokes the process of burning material and imagery. The vegetation appears as a negative of the original, whereby the intense green circle in the lower half of the work is both a contrast but also related to the colour spectrum of fire. The structure of the lines on the work relates to Ancart’s spatial installations and metallic sculptures in which the artist uses tightened wires. This attempt to introduce a compositional element into the work is juxtaposed with the uncontrollable element of visions and utopia inherent to the artist’s practice. Ancart’s work deliberately refutes any categorization into abstract or figurative art: The artistic process ultimately influences the work’s aesthetics rather than any pre-determination or compositional ideology. "When you work for a certain time, you realize that the work creates a universe of its own from which you become almost excluded. The work is a sort of amalgam of pre-determined thought, the action and all the rest" (Harold Ancart in conversation with Devrim Bayar, ‘Visite d’atelier par Devrim Bayar’, Le salon, 2013, online resource).
