Description

  • gilded silver, enamel; fruitwood box, velvet, silk
  • height including suspension loop 3 in. (7.7 cm)
in the 15th century style, the face and clothing of the angel delicately rendered in painted and champlevé enamels and with details highlighted with foils beneath the enamel; shown half-length holding a cross and an orb, all set against a polished gilt ground; hinged, with a heavy suspension piece centered with the Mandylion, the borders ornamented with ornate wirework in a pattern of quatrefoils and scrolls; the reverse with Cyrillic inscription in blue champlevé enamel Holy Guardian Angel Protect Me from All Harm, 84 standard, contained in original fitted wood retailer's case, the velvet lining lifting to reveal a small folded dedicatory note wishing the recipient well in their new home and saying that the icon had just been blessed

overall very good condition; the gilded silver with some oxidation consistent with age, the silk interior with some splitting
