Catalogue Note

It is unusual that this model has been decorated to depict a Leopard as the group was originally modelled as a Lioness. For the companion model of a Lion, see the previous lot, another example is illustrated by Carl Albiker, Die Meissner Porzellantiere im 18. Jahrhundert, 1959, no. 199. Both groups seem to have been designed, circa 1758 for the French market, see the watercolour commissioned by the marchand-mercier Michel-Joseph Lair. An example of this group as a Lioness from the Sir Gawaine and Lady Baillie collection was sold in these rooms on 1st May 2013, lot 168. A version of the same model decorated as a Tigress was sold at Christie's, 13th March 1989, lot 100 and again 7th October 1996, lot 446.
