Condition

The panel is supported by three wooden bevels. There is a vertical crack running down the entire panel beginning 11 cm from the left hand edge. This has been stabilized by an old attachment of canvas to the reverse. The paint surface is dirty, with a discoloured varnish. There is some thinning of paint which is exposing the ground in places. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the following small areas: to the left above the man's head, in the shadows to the right of his face, to the background by the left margin. There are further small scattered old retouchings along his jaw, his ear and to the aforementioned split in the wood. Offered in an ebonized Dutch-style rippled effect frame with a few knocks, but structurally sound.
