Description

  • Pieter van Bredael
  • A busy market scene in a town square with many figures shopping, bargaining and socializing beneath a statue of justice in the centre
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined and as a result the paint surface is quite pressed and worn in the background. The details of the figures, their faces, and the objects on sale at the market are well-preserved however. The paint surface is dirty and the dark tones quite dark. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a blotchy old varnish and old retouchings throughout the sky. Newer restoration has been carried out on two small damages in the canvas lower right (1x1cm.) and in the column left margin (1x2cm). Otherwise just tiny scattered retouchings throughout buildings and figures. Offered in a wooden frame with walnut inlay, in stable condition.
