Marcus Köhler, Porcelain and Diplomacy at the Courts of Hanover and Cologne, Fragile Diplomacy, 2007, p. 194-207
Kändler began working on this model in May 1741 for Clemens August of Bavaria (1700-1761), Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, Prince Bishop of Münster, Paderborn, Hildesheim and Osnabruck. From Kändler's notes it seems the cup was not a commission from the Elector, but was intended as a gift for him. The cup, which is in a private collection is illustrated by Köhler, op. cit., p. 203, fig. 9-12b.
An example with the arms of August III, from The Lesley and Emma Sheafer Collection, Bequest of Emma A. Sheafer, 1973, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, acc. no. 1974.356.337a, b. A further example decorated with a medallion of a hunting scene is in the Westfälische Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Munster.
