Provenance
E. David, Priest's House, Leigh, Surrey, sold Phillips, 1974
Condition
Decorative. The surface of this chair is very interesting. The timber decorated with paint and punch work appears to be stamped with a bookbinders tool. These repeated foliate impressions are very attractive, it is very hard to discern when this impressed decoration occurred, it is certainly very unusual. The paint is distressed and there are losses exposing the walnut core, particularly to areas of heavy ware such as the arm. The rear feet are re-tipped. Evidence of old wear and worm. It's fabric covering appears to be late 17th century although in all likelihood was applied by Wolsey. There is rubbing and wear, and tears as to be expected, to this fabric. It has a decorated Modern label to the underside reading: Provenance - E. Daniel Priests House Leigh Surrey bought 30's from Sam Wolsey sold Phillips 1977/ Remembered by daughter Susan Daniel 0712264725.
