Catalogue Note

The pairing of the two crests and mottos indicates that these chairs were produced after the 1813 marriage of Robert-Nassau Sutton (1776-1833) to Mary Georgiana Manners-Sutton (d. 1846), daughter of John Manners-Sutton.
An identical pair of hall chairs, but without a painted crest, stamped Gillows is in the Abbot Hall Museum and Art Gallery, Kendal (illustrated Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, vol. 1, 2008, pl. 177).
