Catalogue Note
Edward Bouverie (1738-1810) purchased Delapré Abbey in 1764. His son, also Edward, who inherited Delapré undertook extensive building work in the 1820s. His son, Lt. General Everard William Bouverie, who inherited the house in 1858, fought in the Peninsula War from 1812-1814 and was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He attended the last Waterloo Banquet in 1852. It is likely that this centerpiece was acquired in the 1820s as suggested by the style of the coat of arms. In doing so the family was probably motivated by the historical association with the French Empire period and Everard's role in its downfall.
