- PORCELAIN
- heightS 8 3/16 in.
- 20.8 cm
decorated on either side with a raised oval pale yellow-ground panel depicting a female or male portrait medallion painted en grisaille, suspending from a ribbon, applied with satyr's masks scroll handles and raised on a tall quatrefoil base applied with ram's heads.
Condition
The bottles are in generally good condition apart from very minor wear to the gilding in places. The stoppers are soft to the touch and have some minor overspray; which is not very apparent and the exact cause of any possibly damage cannot be determined.

Catalogue Note
"A pair of card toilet bottles (club) finely enamelled and richly finished with burnished and chased gold" was entered in the Sales Catalogue of February 9th and 10th 1773, published in J. E. Nightingale, F.S.A, Contributions towards the History of Early English Porcelain, From Contemporary Sources, p.137. A turquoise-ground example from the Schreiber Collection is now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession no. 414:258, and is also illustrated in Franklin A. Barrett and Arthur L. Thorpe, Derby Porcelain, fig. 115 and in Bernard Rackham, Catalogue of English Porcelain, Earthenware, Enamels and Glass Collected by Charles Schreiber Esq., Volume I, pl. 44, no. 371. Another similarly-decorated example is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Collection, accession no. 14.58.63.
