Catalogue Note

This pair of candelabra are based on earlier nineteenth century Lombard models. The base with three lions' heads is reminiscent of the candelabra drawn by Domenico Moglia for a high altar, illustrated in Enrico Colle, Italian Empire Furniture, Milan, 1998, pg. 263. A drawing illustrated ibid. pg. 263 by an anonymous Lombard artisan shows another similar candelabra with a tripartite lion head base surmounted by a thick, tapering columnar shaft decorated in relief.
