au centre de chaque groupe une corne d'abondance, entourée de la personnification d'un continent, Minerve représentant l'Europe, l'Asie illustré par un Chinois accompagné d'un singe et d'un alligator; l'Amérique personnifiée par un Indien, un lion couché à ses pieds, et l'Afrique coiffée d'une tête d'éléphant

 

Condition

Massive terracotta groups both with plaster fillings undernith. Overall good condition, with a few minor lacks and chips at several places and to the edges. The Orientalist man with some discoloration to the patina. The monkey reattached and his proper left hand missing. The crocodile lower jaw partly missing, Some lacks to the Indian's hair dress ans skirt. America's propoer left foot big toe missing and remains of a turtule beside her. Catalogue Note

Originaire de Bruxelles, Barthelemy Verboeckhoven (1754-1840) dit Fikaert, père du célèbre peintre Eugène, fut actif à la manufacture de porcelaine de Valenciennes, avant de se rendre à Paris pour achever ses études à l'Ecole Royale de Sculpture sous le sculpteur Augustin Pajou (1730-1809).
