Condition

The watercolor seems to have been varnished : minor cracks appear on some areas. Two small scratches appear by the ceiling. On the man's cape, standing in the middle in the foreground, small retouches appear, as well as some (little) others scattered on the composition. A small tear appears above the door, which has been restored, along with small scratches : it is visible on the catalogue. Good general conditon.

Catalogue Note

During his journey in England in October 1844, Louis-Philippe was decorated with the important Order of the Garter by queen Victoria, at the Windsor castle. A very large format painting was commissioned to Nicolas Gosse to commemorate the event (presented in the sale, lot 21). According to the exhibition catalogue Louis-Philippe, l'Homme et le Roi, Nicolas Gosse inspired himself from this precise watercolor. A replica, now kept at the Windsor castle, was executed by Louis Hughe in 1845, with a few variants.
