Condition
Hinge mounted in two places to the upper edge. The sheet has discoloured somewhat from its original blue colour as is evidenced by the two bands of unaffected sheet running along the upper and lower edges. There are a number of small nicks to the edges of the sheet, particularly along the right edge. There are a few small light brown stains to the sheet and evidence of surface dirt throughout. There are signs of rubbing to the black chalk medium, however inspite of this the image remains strong. Sold in a giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note
Attributed to Carmontelle ; Portrait of a man ; Black and red chalk and stumping ; Bears signature and dating in pen and black ink: L.C. Carmontelle delt. 1761.
On the verso, bears black chalk inscription.

This drawing was erroneously exhibited at the National Archives as a Portrait of the duc de Chartres. In 1761, the duc de Chartres was the fourteen year old Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1747-1793). The young man in our portrait does not appear to be the Louis-Philippe, whose appearance at the age of fourteen we know of from Carmontelle’s drawing depicting him in the uniform of Villers Cotterêts (lot n°9).
