U.S.A., Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Companion’s ‘Mollus’ Medal, First Class, engraved no. 2107, as awarded to Captain L.P. d’Orleans, Comte de Paris: A.D.C., U.S. Vols.; together with the original named Warrant of Appointment dated 23 February 1881, also numbered 2107, framed and glazed
Philippe d'Orléans, Comte de Paris (1838-1894) was the grandson of King Louis-Philippe and became heir apparent to the throne of France on the untimely death of his father, Ferdinand, duc d'Orléans, in 1842. Together with his younger brother Robert, duc de Chartres, Philippe volunteered to serve with the Union Army in the American Civil War. In September 1861, with the rank of Captain, he was appointed Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major-General George McClellan, commander of the Army of the Potomac. He served with distinction in the Peninsular Campaign for almost a year, resigning (with his brother) on 15 July 1862.
Philippe became an historian and his substantial History of the Civil War in America remains to this day an important reference work on the subject. As a veteran officer of the Civil War, on 10 November 1880 (the date of 10 November 1881 handwritten on the warrant appears to be a mistranscription) he was elected a First Class Companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
