Catalogue Note

Françoise d’Orléans naquit à Neuilly-sur-Seine. Fille du prince de Joinville et de la princesse Francisca du Brésil, son grand-père paternel n’était autre que Louis-Philippe, Roi des Français, tandis que son grand-père maternel était l’Empereur du Brésil. En juin 1863, elle épousa à Kingston-sur-Tamise à Londres, son cousin direct, le Prince Robert, Duc de Chartres (1840-1910).

The sitter was born at Neuilly-sur-Seine, the daughter of Prince François, Prince of Joinville and Princess Francisca of Brazil. He paternal grandfather was Louis Philippe, King of the French, while her maternal grandfather was Peter, Emperor of Brazil. In June 1863, she married, at Kingston upon Thames, London, her first cousin, Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres (1840-1910).
