Catalogue Note

Masterfully carved and polished to a lustrous finish, this elegant stand is characteristic of zitan furniture of the Qing dynasty. The florid carving style indicates that it was likely to have been produced in the workshops of Suzhou or Beijing. The carver has expertly combined Western Rococo-style motifs onto a traditional form, reflecting the Qing court’s fascination with the European style.

A slightly larger table, but carved with a simpler design of square scrolls and supported on scroll feet, was sold in these rooms, 5th November 2014, lot 123; and a plain waisted stand, also with scroll feet, was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 27th May 2008, lot 1564.
