Description
the domed jade top vigorously carved in relief with a pair of contesting dragons amidst swirling clouds centered by a circular shou medallion forming a knop encircled by a gilt metal leaf-form mount, the hardwood base comprised of an elongated baluster form vertical support, all resting on a low barrel-form base above four bracket-form feet, the wood inlaid with gilt metal leaf scrolls inset with pale blue enamel florets, the jade of an even celadon color

Condition
There are minor nicks to the rim of the jade hat rest. The zitan base has a filled repair to an interior split and another along the exterior upper rim. One of the gilt rings at the mid section is loose and some of the gilt mounts have been stabilized.

Compare the present example to a hardwood and jade example published in Robert Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 51, and sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 27th November 2007, lot 1536. A Qianlong period example of similar form in the British Museum, London was exhibited in Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, Oriental Ceramic Society, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1975, no. 463.
