of circular section with shallow rounded sides on a low tapering foot, deeply carved through thick layers of black and three fine red lacquer layers with robust guri pommels, the centre formed by five heads enclosing a five-pointed star, the exterior decorated with an undulating vine issuing foliate tendrils, the base with two characters reading shen ji, the surface with a glossy sheen

As visible in the catalogue photo there are age cracks, as expected of Ming Guri lacquer. There are bruises to the fragile extremities, especially the foot ring where there is loss to the paint. Other general surface wear and losses to the paint.
