the stout body with tapered rounded sides rising to a broad shoulder and surmounted by a short neck, the exterior vividly painted with a broad frieze of three Buddhist lions prancing amidst dense foliage and interspersed with large iron-red floral blooms, an iron-red band of flames bordering the rim

Provenance

Acquired from Yan Brandt, New York, during the 1990s, by repute.

Condition

The jar is in overall good condition. There are light expected surface scratches in keeping with age, and losses to the enamels particularly more obvious to the iron red. There is a pinhole with an associated 5cm stained body line underneath a red flower and a faintly visible associated stained body line underneath the glaze. There are two pairs of 0.5 cm diameter holes drilled between the neck and shoulder.
